Effect of Aqueous Propolis Chewing Gum in Salivary and Dental Plaque pH

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous propolis chewing gum in salivary and dental plaque pH in children. The studied sample consisted of 30 children aged 8-11 years, all children were taken 5% aqueous propolis chewing gum. Saliva was collected in a pitcher cup, then saliva pH was measured before sucrose solution, after 5 minutes of rinse with 10% sucrose solution, after 5, 10, and 15 minutes of chewing gum. Dental plaque was collected using the plaque collection technique, then dental plaque pH was measured before sucrose solution, after 5 minutes of rinse with 10% sucrose solution, and after 15 minutes of chewing gum. The mean saliva and dental plaque pH decreased significantly (p<0.05) after sucrose consumption. Chewing propolis gum contributed to an increase in the mean saliva pH and dental plaque, whether before or after sucrose consumption in all the studied periods, and this increase was statistically significant (p<0.05). For dental plaque, chewing placebo gum contributed to an increase in the mean dental plaque pH, whether before or after sucrose consumption in all the studied periods (p<0.05). propolis chewing gum contributed to raising saliva and dental plaque pH after 15 minutes.
