Knowledge and awareness of allergic conjunctivitis among population: A Systematic Review

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a common pathological eye condition caused by allergens. It affects the conjunctiva; a thin membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids, for the purposes of keeping it moist. The condition leads to symptoms like redness, itching, tearing, and swelling of the eyes. Awareness of AC among the population cohorts and health care professionals varies, but there is evidence to suggest that it is a common condition which has an effect on the quality of life and needs to be addressed to the public and the general health care professionals. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the awareness and knowledge of patients and general health care professionals about AC. The authors reviewed published studies between 2000 and 2023 on global awareness and knowledge of AC among patients and general health care professionals. The studies were searched in Web of Sciences, Scopus, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and PubMed, for the studies conducted on awareness of AC worldwide. The reviewed studies revealed that awareness and understanding of AC vary among different populations. Furthermore, there is still some misconceptions and lack of awareness about AC among certain segments of the population. therefore, leaflets, and flyers to be distributed via multimedia channels to the community should be a mean to improve public awareness, early detection, and management.
