Parenting Factors In Preventing Sexual Violence Against Children: A Scoping Review

Sexual violence is characterized by sexual activity involving a child and either an adult or another child. Such activity is typically intended to provide gratification for the perpetrator. This study aims to examine the role of parental care in the prevention of sexual violence, based on an analysis of recent international studies. Methods. This research employed a scoping review design using the PRISMA-ScR framework in February 2024, following PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed, EBSCO, ProQuest, and SAGE databases. The search was conducted in English using the keywords “children” or “kids,” “parenting” or “child rearing,” and “prevention of sexual violence,” covering the period from January 2014 to December 2024. Results. Our research identified several factors influencing parenting in relation to the occurrence of child sexual abuse. These factors include parental education, the effectiveness of educational programs, family communication, parental knowledge, and family genograms. Conclusion. Based on the article review, it is crucial to understand the factors through which parenting can influence the risk of sexual violence. The impact is significant; if efforts to prevent sexual violence are not effectively supported by parental care, the risk of such violence will increase.
