Predictors of Literacy and Attitude about Complementary and Alternative Medicine among Adults in Ajman, UAE

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), as an alternative to conventional notions of medicine, has been on the rise in the past decade for the management of conditions including, body pain, anxiety, common cold, and skin conditions. This study determined the predictors of literacy and attitude regarding CAM among adults in Ajman in the United Arab Emirates. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 414 adults, using an interviewer- administered questionnaire in Ajman, from July 2022 to September 2022. SPSS version 28 was used for analysis. Inferential statistics such as Chi-square and logistic regression were performed to establish the association between variables. A p value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Of the respondents, 44% had a good level of literacy, while 79.7% had a positive attitude towards CAM. Age, gender, nationality, marital status, and employment status were significant in determining the level of literacy regarding CAM. Level of literacy about CAM was associated with attitude towards CAM. The predictors for literacy were identified as being female, belonging to the Eastern Mediterranean region, being married, having a positive attitude, and previously using some form of CAM. The majority of respondents had a poor level of literacy regarding CAM and a positive attitude towards CAM. Female gender, nationality of Eastern Mediterranean region, being married, having a positive attitude, and previously using CAM were seen to be the predictors of literacy.
