Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease in Tabuk area

Sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant health burden globally and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are among the countries with the highest prevalence. Understanding the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of SCD in specific populations is essential for tailored management and preventive strategies. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and pattern of hemoglobinopathies in Tabuk City, Saudi Arabia. This study is a retrospective study that was conducted in Tabuk City, among pediatric patients with SCD. Records from three hospitals over a two-year period were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. Eighty-six pediatric patients with SCD were included, predominantly of the SS genotype. e.g. Consanguinity was observed in 66.2% of the patients. Most patients had 1-5 episodes per year. Hydroxyurea was utilized in 82.4% of patients and proved efficacy in reducing the frequency of crisis. Male patients had more frequency of splenectomy as well as consanguinity. Consanguinity was reported in two-thirds of cases. Vaso-occlusive crises occurred frequently. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to evaluate therapeutic efficacy and explore novel treatment modalities. Community-based initiatives are crucial for raising awareness and fostering support for patients and families affected by SCD.
