Risk factors, presenting symptoms and time of diagnosis for women with breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most frequently occurring tumor and the first cause of death in female. Low level of understanding early symptoms leads to a late diagnosis and high mortality rates. The study aimed to describe risk factors, presenting symptoms and time of diagnosis for women with breast cancer. A descriptive study. Study data were collected from a convenience sample of (250) women with breast cancer in Baghdad City for the period from June 20th 2022 through Nonember31th 2023. The study instrument consists of four parts; the first one is Socio-demographic Characteristic, and the second part includes clinical characteristics, and Third part includes questions about risk factors for breast cancer and the fourth part includes presenting symptoms and time of diagnosis. The data were analyzed approach by using (SPSS 22.0) using descriptive and inferential statistical test for data analysis. The mean age of patients was 46.83years ± 12.32. High BMI>25 were the most risk factors of breast cancer in (71.6%) of patients. The most frequent symptoms were painless breast lump (n = 226; 90.4%), discharge from nipple (n = 154; 61.6%), and 59.2% of patients presented with advanced stage III, and followed by stage IV in (20.0%) of patients. It was concluded that the most contributing risk factors in the occurrence of women with breast cancer are: BMI, family history of breast cancer, painless breast lump was the most frequent symptom, and most patients presented with advanced stage III.
