The Prevalence and Indications of Proton Pump Inhibitors Use Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Single-center experience

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most widely prescribed medications and are frequently used for both short-term treatment of acid-related disorders and long-term prophylaxis in high-risk patients. this study aimed to determine the prevalence, and indications for PPI use among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Saudi Arabia. This was an observational, cross-sectional study, including patients with pre-dialysis CKD who were following in our outpatient nephrology clinics. Data were obtained from patients’ electronic medical records and were analyzed and described using Microsoft excel analytic functions. A total of 310 patients with pre-dialysis CKD were included in the present analysis. The mean age of the study population was 66.1± 16.6, and 56% were male. Diabetes was the most common cause of CKD (62%), followed by hypertension (19%). Obesity was common with 44% of the patients having BMI above 30 kg/m2. Almost half of the patients (48%) were using PPI, with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) being the most reported indication (41%). No clear indication was reported for PPI use in 49.5% of the participants. PPI use is common among CKD patients, with a lack of clear indication in a substantial number of these patients. Because of the higher risk of AKI, CKD progression, and biochemical disturbances, clinicians should scrutinize the indication and duration of PPI therapy in CKD.
